Social Security Number

You typically will need to wait at least 10 days after arriving before you can apply for a Social Security Number (SSN). You would typically need the following documents:

  1. Valid Passport

  2. DS-2019 Form

  3. I-94 form

  4. Employment letter

  5. SSN application form (also known as form SS-5)

You then need to bring this to a local Social Security Office (check beforehand whether or not you need to make an appointment).

You will need a SSN in order to get paid, apply for medicaid reimbursement enrolment, pay taxes, etc

State Identification

Check your local state requirements regarding obtaining a state license. This will typically require having an SSN. This may be required, for instance, to obtain a cellphone plan in the USA.
