Immigration to the USA as a Fellow

Concretely, you are likely to only start the immigration process once you have received confirmation that you have been admitted to a fellowship program into the USA, classically ~6 months prior to your expected fellowship start date (e.g., for an anticipated start date in July 2024, I would recommend starting the immigration process no later than January 2024). For some for whom the type of visa they receive (e.g., if you would like to stay in the USA after the end of your fellowship and/or would like to do locums while you are doing your fellowship), the type of Visa granted by your fellowship program may make a significant difference and this is something you may want to discuss during the interview/application process with potential programs of choice.
